The Perfect Pairing

I am lucky to share my love/obsession of food with my sister, Margaret, and her husband Kyle. We exchange recipes, photos, and ideas of the exciting and delicious dishes we create. Though we value cooking on our own, we wouldn’t be true foodies if we didn’t explore the culinary developments around us. And this couple has done just that. Margaret and Kyle discovered their favorite restaurant, so special that they only attend with a good excuse. I was honored to be a good enough excuse to try their beloved tapas and wine bar. I suppose college graduation is a pretty big deal. So, after hearing all about this restaurant and even seeing many photos from Margaret and Kyle, I finally got to try Abigail Street! We walked into this beautiful restaurant, tucked neatly into a row of shops in Over-the-Rhine and were greeted with warm lights, friendly workers, and simple decorations. The waitress, Sarah, welcomed her two familiar guests and immediately helped us choose our wine for the night. After landing on a bottle of light and fruity French wine, we considered the 6 tapas we wished to share. Though I could discuss the unbelievably fluffy gnocchi with a brown butter sauce, maitake mushrooms, and asparagus or the delicate soft-shell crab paired with a chimichurri dipping sauce, this is a sweets blog so I will cut to the chase.

The dessert we chose is one that I wish I could eat at least once a week. It is one that I have dreamt about since the day Margaret described it to me. It is the perfect combination of foods. To end our lovely meal, we ordered the well-known and masterfully paired “Ricotta and Local Honey.” This dish was served to us on a long plate compiled of perfectly grilled bread and a large bowl of the best homemade ricotta I could ask for combined with sweet local honey, all topped with fresh thyme. This dish was out of the world; subtly sweet because of the honey, with a bold flavor kick from the grill marks on the bread and sprigs of thyme. The only way to eat this correctly is to dollop heaps of the ricotta and honey mixture onto your bread and make some uncomfortable noises in order to display your bliss and release that happiness. Thank you, Margaret and Kyle, for an evening of food, drink, dessert, and discussion that I will never forget. Happy eating, everyone!

A Shot of Rum, Please

I remember when cupcake bakeries took over our town, then we had enough frozen yogurt to feed my family for a lifetime (trust me, we eat A LOT of ice cream), and now boozy ice cream is taking over! (Well, it isn’t quite there yet, but it has potential). Though I have yet to try Tipsy Scoop in New York, it sells alcohol infused ice cream just like Cincinnati’s Buzzed Bull Creamery. Devin, Morgan, her boyfriend, Michael, and I traveled downtown to OTR in route to experience the ice cream that everyone is talking about! Here is the deal–although there is a lame “non-buzzed” option for the kiddies, customers are able to order 1, 1.5, or 2 shots of ice cream in whatever dish they want. If you think you know your sweets AND booze enough to customize your order, then do so at your own risk. For the less confident people, such as my friends and myself, we chose from the “Specialty Flavors” menu in which Buzzed Bull created lovely dishes for us. Being the peanut butter fanatic that I am, I ordered “Tiger Stripes.” This chocolate flavored ice cream is combined with peanut butter cups, SPICED RUM, and topped with peanut butter sauce. I mean come on, how bad could that be?! Ice cream, peanut butter, and spiced rum! One interesting point about this shop is that the ice cream is made with liquid nitrogen to flash freeze your order. If you like your ice cream a little melted, this might throw you off because mine never reached that velvety soft texture I look for in ice cream. Nevertheless, with a fun and modern interior and any alcohol you may desire, Buzzed Bull Creamery is certainly a unique experience! Happy eating (and drinking), everyone!

My Dream Cake

My friends are the absolute best. After a delicious Greek dinner, inclusive of gyros, tzatziki, and wine in Astoria to celebrate my birthday, they surprised me with a cake. Now for those of you who know me, you understand that I am quite fond of this thick, fluffy, sugary dessert. Others may use the term “obsessed” to describe this affection, but that seems a little critical to me. Since I have tried most of the well-known bakeries in the city that serve cake, my friends really had to consider where to purchase this one. With that being said, I am pleased to announce that they killed the game! Erika and Ashley landed on the famous Peanut Butter & Jelly Cake from Buttercup Bake Shop. Another fun fact about me, and one that I will admit, is that I really am OBSESSED with peanut butter. It is one of those foods that you wish you could combine with every meal of every day. So as you may be able to deduce, this cake flavor was the PERFECT decision. A yellow and slightly peanutty sponge paired with decadent peanut butter icing and layers of refreshing strawberry jam. The combo is definitely not one for those who are sensitive to sweetness, because man oh man is it intense! Good thing I can withstand, and even encourage, any amount of sugar in my desserts. They don’t call me Beasweets for nothing! Thank you, friends, for taking the time to pick out the cake of my dreams. Happy eating, everyone!

Ube Soft Swerve

Displaying image1.JPGI do not know about you guys, but I truly believe that soft serve is one of the most delicious sweet treats one could eat while the sun is out. It’s incredibly refreshing, soft and velvety. What more could you wish for on a hot summer day? Although I did cheat and fast forward seasons a bit, I figured the beautiful weather on Sunday warranted ice cream! And no, before you ask, I did not stoop low enough to sneak in a quick cone from the ice cream truck. Wait, what am I saying?! That would also have been amazing! But, after a long day of apartment searching, my roommate and I decided to finally visit Soft Swerve. Now this ice cream joint does not sell your typical chocolate and vanilla soft serve…though again, never a bad thing. Instead, its Ube flavored ice cream has swept the nation! (Or maybe just New York). “What is Ube?” some of you may be asking. That my friends, is a great question. This lovely ice cream is composed of PURPLE SWEET POTATOES. How cool is that?! Delicately piled into a “black chocolate” cone and topped with toasted coconut and finely chopped toasted almonds, this dessert will not disappoint. The next time I stop by, I will be mixing my Ube with the Black Sesame flavored soft serve! Until then, I am swerving out of here. Happy eating, everyone!

Abby Girl Sweets

Wow–it has been entirely too long since I have been inspired with a new bakery. This is partially my fault because I somehow always end up at my favorites…Amy’s Bread I am looking at you. Thankfully, though, this small family-run bakery located near my hometown gave me an excuse to blog again. Abby Girl Sweets Cupcakery has two locations in Cincinnati and get this–on top of their abundant cupcake staples that are always available, store owners, Nathan and Andrea Thompson, also keep customers on their toes with a flavor of the week. I need to let you guys in on a little secret to get my point across. My obsession with cake includes cake slices and cake slices only (okay you got me, I love cake balls too). Anyway, I rarely find cupcakes that bring me just as much joy as a thick, dense piece of cake. To my astonishment, Abby Girl Cupcakes achieved this satisfaction. Before I tasted one, my friends, Andrea and Abby Swensen, were trying to convince me that these cupcakes would blow my mind. I was almost scared to try them because I am very aware of my cake snobbery. Luckily, I ended up trying two of their signature flavors including, Strawberry Delight and Vanilla Bean…and then went back for the Double Trouble (a chocolate cupcake filled with vanilla buttercream, dipped in ganache). And guess what!! I LOVED them all. The flavors were rich, the cake silky smooth, and the frosting just sweet enough. Thank you, Abby Girl Sweets Cupcakery, for making me cupcakes I am excited (and proud) to come home to. Until next time! Happy eating, everyone 🙂

Delmonico’s Steakhouse

delmonicosIf I have learned one thing in college, it is that dreams do come true. Not only was I, Beatrice Craycraft, fortunate enough to spend time with amazing company, but I was also treated to a meal most people can only dream about. Okay, now allow me to explain. My sister and her fiancé recently drove my little sister to New York to visit me at the end of my fall semester. The highlight of our trip was meeting our great aunt and uncle at one of New York’s finest and oldest steakhouses. We ended our delicious, indulgent, and decadent steak meal full of appetizers, wine, and of course, meat with an assortment of desserts. Here is the laydown: cheesecake with passionfruit coulis, macadamia, and pine nut crunch, tahitian vanilla crème brûlée with caramel sauce and apple accents, and finally, baked alaska. Now as much as I loved the silky smooth crème brûlée, the baked alaska was what really got my attention–since it was my first one! What is truly special about tasting this dessert at Delmonico’s is that is was actually created by the pastry chef, Charles Ranhofer, at this very restaurant in 1867. It consists of walnut cake, apricot jam, banana gelato, and meringue. I have to admit, I never really felt the need to go out of my way to try this unique dessert, but I am thrilled I was finally able to. The three layers, including cake, gelato, and meringue, meshed so perfectly that it was hard to imagine them individually. Although the meringue was blowtorched, it provided a structured, yet creamy binding for the rest of the dessert. The subtle walnut cake created the perfect base for the smooth and slightly melted gelato. A combination of this fine dessert, fantastic rib eye, delicious red wine, and exquisite company fostered a truly unforgettable evening. Thank you, Delmonico’s, and my incredible family for the night of my life. Happy eating and Merry Christmas, everyone!

Jacob’s Pickles

I’d say a sure sign that any restaurant is pretty good is when you have to wait over two hours to earn a table. Heck, even an hour proves some credibility. While interning at Viacom at the beginning of this year, my boss (a seasoned New Yorker) told me I had to try Jacob’s Pickles. Though I usually don’t get too excited about heavy, fried southern food, this brunch spot definitely caught my attention. Besides the obvious pickles, Jacob’s Pickles specializes in biscuits and fried chicken. Did I ever mention that I really like biscuits? My mom oftentimes makes them for our Sunday family brunch. I enjoy them best smothered in butter, honey, and jam. Hey, I am allowed to be ridiculous sometimes. Alright, back to the fried chicken. Instead of pairing it with waffles, as most southern comfort restaurants do, Jacob’s Pickles piles the juicy, crisp chicken on top of PANCAKES…not to mention the tiny pieces of bacon scattered all over this concoction and then doused in maple syrup! Oh but don’t you worry, I didn’t forget about my biscuits. After I split the chicken and pancakes with my friend, I ordered the BISCUIT BREAD PUDDING loaded with scoops of vanilla ice cream. This pudding was silky, not too sweet, and incredibly indulgent. Jacob’s Pickles, even though you stole my figure, you won my heart. Good thing Thanksgiving is two days away…more indulgence to come 🙂 Happy eating, everyone!

Milk & Cookies

unnamedOnce a month I am privileged enough to get together with an awesome group of people and explore a new restaurant. Because I am always in it for the sweets, I never fail to find us a bakery nearby. This time I landed on a hidden gem that has been on my list for years. Milk & Cookies is an adorable little shop out of sight to anyone walking down the main streets of New York. You really have to know about this place in order to find it. Now I have tried many amazing cookies in the city, including Levain’s famous chocolate chip walnut and my guilty work pleasure, City Cake’s half pounder. Therefore, I honestly did not have very high hopes for this place. My skepticism was completely reversed the second I opened the rustic teal door and was greeted by a delicious warm and sugary scent. Though some of my friends just ordered a single cookie, I never back down from whatever treat a bakery is known for. So, choosing between maybe 12 different cookie flavors, I picked each side of my ice cream sandwich. I landed on vanilla ice cream inside of a peanut butter chocolate chip (surprise, surprise) and a S’MORES cookie. Something about this flavor combination, the slightly under cooked cookies, and the perfectly softened vanilla bean ice cream crafted one of the best desserts I have ever had. I really don’t understand how something so simple could have such a positive affect on me, but man was I in heaven…a moment of silence, please. If you are ever craving an ice cream cookie sandwich, you MUST check out Milk & Cookies and order the EXACT combination that I chose. Absolute perfection. Happy eating, everyone!

rice-cream-shoppeWeeks ago my boss sent me a link to one of the best New York festivals that I could ask for. With descriptions like “a week’s worth of calories,” and recommendations to “wear your stretchy pants,” how could a foodie like myself look away from an opportunity like this?! Dessert Fest, actually the first in New York, involves 20 different SWEETS venues from all FIVE boroughs under ONE roof. Even the coffee lovers were treated with unlimited Intelligentsia coffee and demonstrations from Bodum experts. Greeted at the door with giant donut balloons, adorable signs with quotes about the importance of dessert, throwback music, and the most delicious smell of sugary waffles, we could not wait to try our first dessert! We started off in the long line for Taiyaki fish shaped waffles. These masterpieces were soft on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside. Stuffed with sweet red beans and topped with matcha soft serve, this treat was definitely the highlight of my day. The next step in our food lineup was Jae NYC Eats for an “artisanal Twinkie-inspired ‘Cakie.'” After Ashley and I split the Chocolate Baileys’ Cakie, we stopped in the photo garden out back and on the rooftop upstairs, each decorated specifically for taking beautiful foodie pictures. Finally, I ended my hour and a half time slot with fantastic Biscotti rice pudding from the Rice Cream Shoppe. Even though we were pretty rushed, I cannot wait for the next NYC Dessert Fest. Thank you, Miraya and Liang for putting together such an exciting festival. Foodies, unite! Happy eating, everyone!

The Parisians Wouldn’t Approve

union-fare

After studying abroad in London and traveling to Paris for one of our weekend trips, the crew and I have had our fair share of croissants. We all know how much butter and flakiness it takes to create such a magical treat. Therefore, the newest dessert trend at Union Fare was exactly what we needed. We waltzed into this large, modern food hall with our noses up high in preparation to compare the authentic buttery goodness to America’s take on croissants. What we realized is that it truly isn’t right to make this comparison because Union Fare croissants would never even be allowed to step foot in Paris, or Europe for that matter. These sweet treats were stuffed, topped, and made into Red Velvet, Birthday Cake, Matcha, Cookies & Cream, and Crème Brûlée. What truly amazed me about these Americanized croissants is that although they were all stuffed with a thick and delicious filling, the pastry still managed to be light and crispy!! I was in bliss while eating the Birthday Cake and Red Velvet. They were surprisingly not too sweet even though the birthday cake had a funfetti filling and the red velvet a cream cheese icing filling. I wish I could try every one of these beautiful pieces of decadence. Although the Parisians wouldn’t approve, this American is very pleased with Union Fare’s newest food trend. Happy eating, everyone!
